Arugam Bay is on the east coast, and the best season to be here is when it’s too rainy in the south. The weather gods grace Arugam Bay with dry skies while the rest of the island is battered by monsoon rains. It’s best to visit between April and September. Here Baby Point is better for beginners, while Main Point is for more advanced riders. Elephant Rock, a tuk-tuk ride from Arugam Bay, is great for beginners, but don’t wear flip-flops, as you have to climb rocks to get to it. It’s worth it because the beach is so beautiful. If you’re an experienced surfer, make your way to Pottuvil and Whisky Point, north of Arugam Bay. Whisky Point tends to get crowded, so don’t rock up too late in the day.

The main beach at Arugam Bay is very pleasant, but the highlight here is Elephant Rock, an immensely beautiful beach that’s perfect for novice surfers. It’s harder to get to than the main beach – you’ll need to get a tuk tuk (about a 15 minute ride) and clamber over some rocks (wear appropriate shoes!), but it’s well worth it for the solitude and amazing surf break there. Its namesake is no lie either – you may well see wild elephants roaming around here.

If you can’t make the trek to Elephant Rock, the beach in Arugam Bay itself isn’t to be looked down on. People often describe this area as what Bali’s Kuta was 30 years ago, and this moon-shaped bay is a surfer- and traveller-friendly destination with all the amenities you would need for a day at the beach. That means beachside cafes and food stalls aplenty. For surfing, beginners should point their boards towards Baby Point while more advanced surfers should head for Main Point and Whisky Point. Once again, the best time to go is April to October.

Where: South-East Sri Lanka

The Area: The area is extremely beautiful and is the most traveler friendly and surfer friendly zone in the region. Although many of the structures were wiped out by the 2004 Tsunami things have slowly normalised again and the waves are as good as ever! The area is on the edge of Yala East National Park and is the perfect place to spot elephants, wild boar, water buffalo and exotic birds 

Beach: Beautiful moon shaped bay that has a host of beach side cafes and food shacks, as well as all the amenities you need for a day out at the beach

Type: Arugam Bay is easily one of the best best beginner surf spots, especially for regular footers, with an endless supply of right hand sand bottom points and beaches, the only factor will be your stamina!

Best Time: April to October

Weather: Daytime highs can reach 34ºC with evenings dropping to around 26ºC. The sea temperature, like all of Sri Lanka, feels like bathwater and stays around 28ºC all year

Elephant rock – Arugambay

Town: Arugam Bay, South-East Sri Lanka

Where: The wave is located 4kms south of the main Arugam Bay surf break and can be reached by tuk-tuk in 15 minutes

The Area: Unbelievably scenic area with green pastures touching the golden sands surrounded by palms. It is a wonderful place to spot wild elephants as they stroll along the sand at sunrise and sunset  

Beach: Untouched slice of paradise that offers the true island experience of solitude surrounded by nature

Type: Extremely fun right hand point that offers plenty of sections and peeling walls

Best Time: April to October 

Weather: Daytime highs can reach 34ºC with evenings dropping to around 26ºC. The sea temperature stays between 26 – 28ºC all year.  

Pottuvil

North of Arugam Bay, Pottuvil is a right point break, small but hollow, that is more suitable for experienced surfers. This is one of the best right-handers in the island but, unfortunately, it tends to only work in August and September, when it offers incredibly long rides of over 800 meters (0.5 miles). There are multiple take-off points, which means that crowds are rarely an issue.

Peanut Farm Beach

A semi-secret surf spot within easy reach from Arugam Bay, Peanut Farm Beach is home to a right-hand point break with two sections: Main Point and Baby Point.

Main Point is a technical wave with a fast take-off and barreling sections and, therefore, recommended for more experienced surfers. Baby Point is mellower and more suitable for beginners. If you’re lucky, you might see these two connect and catch a long and exciting ride that simply cannot get any better!
